Effects on Your Baking

Regular molasses (not blackstrap) is the closest match to black treacle. Both are dark, intensely flavored syrups with deep caramel-bitter notes. Molasses may be very slightly more bitter, while treacle has a touch more sweetness. In heavily spiced recipes like gingerbread, the difference vanishes.
